چکیده

Studies on natural communication in shape modeling show that both direct manipulation of geometry and the expression of constraints are essential. Current solutions on constraint-based modeling do not support the verbal management of constraints. This paper presents a scheme to recognize and manage geometry-related constraints verbally. The execution and interpretation of constraint management actions is done based on a constraint library and a focus stack. As there are implicit and explicit relationships between the constraints and the geometry, special attention is given to propagate changes among them. A 2D Java implementation was made that supports a limited set of the proposed functionality. The proposed scheme seems capable of dealing with dynamism in geometric constraints, a shifting focus in discourse, and the possibility to use multimodal input. Its use is not limited to singleuser situations. In collaborative design, similar notions in the verbal and multimodal dialogue apply.

Extracting Procedural and Contextual Elements of Verbal Com- Munication to Instruct a Shape Conceptualization System

This paper presents a framework of processing verbal communication applied in computer supported shape conceptualization. As typical form of communication between the user and the computer system is supposed the one in which the user controls the system. In the practice it means that we can suppose to have instructional sentences as input. Instructional sentences have a more or less regular gra...

Virtual Design Environments

COMMUNICATIONS OF THE ACM December 2001/Vol. 44, No. 12 59 (VDE)—is achieved by advanced verbal, gestural, visio-spatial, physical, and other means. The emerging tools should have the potential to handle shape input from several users (designers, customers, among others) concurrently [3]. Nonetheless, the goal is to have dedicated geometric modeling techniques offering new opportunities in coll...

Verbal Interface for Vague Discrete Shape Modeler

Due to the nature of the involved human thinking and creative actions, product conceptualization necessitates the ability of handling incompleteness, vagueness, and frequent changes in the models. The user interfaces and modeling schemes of recent CAD systems are typically not able to cope with this kind of information. Verbalism, as the primary communication mode of human beings, is adapted to...

Towards a Natural User Interface for Comprehensive Support of Conceptual Shape Design

The lack of possibility of creative communication in the conceptualization phase of the design process significantly decreases the effectiveness. The aim of this research is to find effective non-traditional shape conceptualization techniques. The paper presents an analysis of the activities in the conceptualization process and the man–machine communication. It also shows how to evaluate and se...

Neurocognitive insights on conceptual knowledge and its breakdown

Conceptual knowledge reflects our multi-modal ‘semantic database’. As such, it brings meaning to all verbal and non-verbal stimuli, is the foundation for verbal and non-verbal expression and provides the basis for computing appropriate semantic generalizations. Multiple disciplines (e.g. philosophy, cognitive science, cognitive neuroscience and behavioural neurology) have striven to answer the ...
